Description
Antique 18th Century Chinese Export Teacup & Saucer, 1751. Recovered from the Nanking Cargo Ship Wreck (1980). Porcelain, underglaze. 4.75'' diameter saucer, cup 1.5x3''. Sold at Christie's Amsterdam Lot 5533 (1986).
The 'Nanking cargo' was the well-documented Dutch VOC ship 'De Geldermalsen' which sunk in the South China Sea during her homeward journey in 1752. The contents were salvaged by Captain Michael Hatcher and offered for sale at Christie's Amsterdam in the spring of 1986.
